TL;DR

ZAR and VELO both put 20 tobacco-free pouches in a can, and neither is FDA authorized. The real difference is the pouch: ZAR's AirPouch is built to be as thin as possible (under 1mm, per ZAR), while VELO is a conventional slim pouch with a bigger flavor range and wide store distribution. Choose ZAR for the lowest-profile pouch and a far wider strength range; choose VELO if you want something you can pick up at most convenience stores.

In one sentence: ZAR is the ultra-thin specialist with strengths up to 35mg; VELO is the mainstream slim pouch with ten flavors.

The pouch: thin vs slim

ZAR's whole pitch is the format. It calls the pouch an AirPouch, describes it as under 1mm thick, and lists the form as "Ultra Slim" on its product pages. The point is a pouch that sits flat with as little bulge as possible.

VELO's pouch is a standard slim pouch. VELO does not publish a thickness, so we can't put a number next to ZAR's. What we can say is that ZAR is the only one of the two that is designed and marketed around thinness.

Strength range

This is where the brands differ most. ZAR runs from 3mg, a sensible starting point, up to 16mg and 35mg cans in several flavors. Those top strengths are far above anything on FDA's authorized list and are meant only for very experienced users. Our VELO records cover 4mg and 7mg cans, and VELO's strengths vary by flavor.

If you are choosing between them as a newer user, the lower strengths are what matter: ZAR's 3mg and 6mg, or VELO's 4mg. Our 3mg vs 6mg guide explains how to pick.

What ZAR says about its formula

According to ZAR's FAQ and its DuraPress page, every AirPouch is under 1mm thick and comes 20 to a can. The pouch is tobacco-free, made with plant-based fibers and food-grade flavorings, and sweetened with stevia and other sugar substitutes rather than sucrose or xylitol; a cooling agent is used in some flavors but not all. ZAR says the formula is pH-balanced at about 7. Shelf life is up to 24 months, with manufacture and expiry dates printed on each pack. ZAR does not say whether its nicotine is synthetic or tobacco-derived.

Flavors

ZAR (10): Fresh Mint, Spearmint Fresh, Wintergreen Bright, Citrus, Lemon Crush, Cola, Watermelon, Strawberry Lush, Grape Splash and Berry Vibe. ZAR also sells nicotine-free Energy and Coffee AirPouches.

VELO (10, US lineup): Mint, Citrus, Citrus Burst, Wintergreen, Spearmint, Peppermint, Cinnamon, Dragon Fruit, Black Cherry and Coffee.

The ranges overlap on mint, wintergreen, spearmint and citrus. ZAR leans into sweeter flavors such as Cola, Watermelon and Strawberry Lush (descriptions in ZAR's Flavor & Strength Library); VELO covers spice and coffee.

FDA status

Neither brand is FDA authorized. VELO has submitted premarket tobacco applications; ZAR is not on FDA's authorized list. If authorization is a requirement for you, look at ZYN or on! PLUS, whose products are on FDA's list. Our FDA-authorized nicotine pouches guide lists them all.

Which should you buy?

  • Choose ZAR if the thinnest possible pouch is your priority, or if you want a strength range that goes well past what mainstream brands sell. Start at 3mg or 6mg if you are not a heavy user.
  • Choose VELO if you want a familiar slim pouch with spice and coffee flavors that you can buy in person at most convenience stores.
  • Choose neither if FDA authorization is a must: go with ZYN or on! PLUS.
